What Do I Think About : Poetic Ammo - It's A Nice Day To Be Alive

Hi, it's been quite awhile and I would like to apologize for the lack of updates. But hey, I'm back and don't think that I'll ever stop.

So...

This time around, I chose to write about something that's very old. I believe many of you have forgotten about them. While you all are bumping to new stuff that just hit the stores, I decided to take myself back to the roots, to where it all started. This is the group that truly made Hip-Hop big in Malaysia. By the way, I'm not hatin' on anyone.

This is the first debut album by the legendary Hip-Hop group, Poetic Ammo. Don't tell me you never heard of them or else, stop reading this post and stop listening to local Hip-Hop. Back then, this group were made up of 4 talented-ill emcees who goes by the name of Yogi B, Point Blanc, Land Slyde & C.Loco. Word from Point Blanc, the group still exist but with just wo members left (Yogi B & Point Blanc). So that's about it. The album is called It's A Nice Day To Be Alive, this album is still fresh though it was released back in '98. It's been ten years and this album still rocks. The album cover is ill and you'll know it's a Hip-Hop album just by looking at the cover. I'm so sorry I couldn't find the picture of the album cover on the net and the only picture I found is the picture I've posted above. So if you have the picture of the cover for this album, please email me and help me to post up the picture right here. Oh, I have to stress this, the productions in this album is straight hardcore, so it was a brave move (at that time) to attack the local industry by introducing theirselves with this concept. Think Wu-Tang.

I found this at MidValley's Rock Corner while I was walking around killing my boredom. Still can't believe I found this classic album. Yeah you read that right. It's a classic. Why? Let's move on.

01. Look Out Below....
This is the intro of the album and it's ill. Nuff said.

02. Kuala Lumpur
Do not compare this to Too Phat's KL coz this track is straight up hardcore. Props to Point Blanc for droppin few familiar places on this track and I guess Point Blanc and Land Slyde stood up the most in this track. Maybe it's because of the imageries and the chemistry they had through-out the whole track. Catchy chorus.

03. Interlude
This is actually an intro for the next track. On this track, Yogi B explains how thankful he is to be born in Malaysia. Nothing much. Let's move on.

04. It's A Nice Day To Be Alive ft. Sam from Innuendo
The first time I listened to this track, it bored me. But I decided to give the track a few listens and I found that this track is quite nice. The beat is still dull for me though. Point Blanc opens this track with an energetic verse and I think his part is the best and Yogi B's verse deserves a compliment.

05. Something's On
I'm sure many of you have heard of this track before. Bumpy beats, catchy chorus and everything. Surprisingly, this track is boring. Sorry to say, Land Slyde's part sounds very annoying. Let's move on.

06. Drama Department Presents...
This is my thing right here. A very creepy intro and it got me waiting for the next track. Next.

07. Evils Of Man ft. Flipside a.k.a Sashi Kumar
This track got the element of Horrorcore. The beats, the rhymes, the delivery, everything about this track is creepy as fuck. Familyboy might be the pioneer of Horrorcore in Malaysia but this track sure deserves my props for introducing the genre to the country by accident. This is a dope joint! C.Loco finally got my attention by being the dopest member to spit on this track.

08. Father Be With Us ft. Pot & Taj of Innuendo
This is a very personal track by Land Slyde & C.Loco (they're brothers). Been listening to the track a few times because of the chorus. This is a dope track. I like it.

09. You Say What 'Bout Hip-Hop (Take No.1)

10. Peluru Puitis
This track was their first attempt to rap in Malay and they failed miserably, especially Yogi B.

11. Run Again...
I don't know what's the point of this track but it's pretty nice.

12. Approximate Detonation
This track is actually a bonus track and you will only find this track if you by the album in CD form. But this track is boring. So there's nothing special about this track.

13. Vallavan ft. Sri Ram
I actually like the beat for this track. But the only problem is I don't understand Tamil so I can't comment much about this track.

14. The Awakening......
Just another creepy intro.

15. Real For The World
The beat is dope at first, but it gets boring through-out the whole track. This track could've been better if they use another beat. Yogi B's verse is the best and Point Blanc's verse is boring. Overall this is a boring track and the outro is long as fuck.

16. You Say What 'Bout Hip-Hop (Take No.2)

17. Kam Sang Tah Kong Chai ft. Jerica & David a.k.a White Day, The Monk
Once again, I like the beat for this track and I actually can sing the chorus very well but I don't understand Cantonese so I can't comment much. But I was surprised that Land Slyde can rap in Cantonese. Props!

18. You Say What 'Bout Hip-Hop (Take No.3)
Word.

19. Everything Changes ft. Lady D
I think everybody in the local Hip-Hop scene have heard of this track. They all rap about their past experiences and backgrounds which to me is a good thing. Yogi B ends this track with a really good advice.

"Don't try, you know you'll miss"

And when you put Lady D on the chorus, you know that particular track will turn out very good. That's what happened to this track.

20. Radio PTRS
This track is hilarious as fuck. This track ends with the DJ saying

"Saya akan putarkan irama yang lembut dan indah"

21. Ammunition Check ft. Dave Childs
But what I heard on this track is very different. This is one hardcore track. Nice one DJ. Hahah. Everybody is very energetic on this track. A very nice way to end an album. Props to Land Slyde for being the fiyah on this track. But at one point, Yogi B's not making any sense but it's all good. This is a dope joint!

22. Raw Gratitudes
Unnecessary but I like it.

The conclusion is, Poetic Ammo did a very good job by introducing Hip-Hop to Malaysia with this kind of style and I believe they succeed at doing it. To me, this album is a classic. Nuff said. You still can get this album at all Rock Corner outlets in KL. They're still selling it. Though their era have ended but the name will forever be remembered as the group who truly made Hip-Hop big in Malaysia. But they still exist! Dope shit.

What Do I Think About : Yin Yang - The First Verse

Yin Yang Twins? Hell no, this is Yin Yang from JBC, Malaysia of course. Our Yin Yang. Heheh. What, you don't know what the Hell is JBC? Well, it simply means Johor Baru Clan and they own the southside of Malaysia. Believe that! Some say this dude is like the pioneer of 'home recording' in Malaysia. So I gotta give him the respect coz I record my own stuff at my place too. Haha.

This is old though, but I'm feeling like writing something about it. Why? Coz I support local Hip-Hop, so this is like my responsibility man. So, my man Yin Yang dropped an EP long time ago, somewhere around 2006 I guess. Somehow I managed to contact him online and long story short, I bought the EP straight from the man himself. It came with his signature too, man that's dope!

The album cover is fucking simple and that's it. No production credits or whatsoever. Just the tracklist and the tracklist is the album cover. Haha. So I'm not sure who produced all the tracks in this EP. I guess you have to contact him for more info. So his EP is called The First Verse. It contains 5tracks + 1intro = 6tracks. So let's break it down one by one shall we?

01. Southside ft. Big Ben
This track got that crunk feel into it. A dirty south track. Yes, it's raw and dirty. Catchy chorus and it's like you can sing along to it, which is good I suppose. Yin knows how to rock a party very well and I can tell it by listening to his verse. Big Ben, yeah, it's Big Ben. I don't know what to say bout his part though. It's all good I guess. But the "JBC till I DIE" part didn't work for me though.

02. Rain ft. Schizzow
If you wanna do a love track, you just should call Schizzow to collaborate with you coz he's so good at doing love tracks. I just love the beat, seriously. The beat really helps to set up that love vibe all around you. The chorus is catchy, but I would prefer the chorus without Yin's rapping along to the chorus. Yin came out pretty good on this. Next!

03. Say Goodbye ft. Jay' & Vixxstarr
Another love track. Don't really like the chorus plus the beat is just plain mediocre. But Yin spits some emo shit throughout his verse. Haha. But I have to admit that sometimes he does sound annoying. Vixxstarr's lyrical content is better than Yin's though but I don't know, the way Vixx recorded his vocal is awful.

04. Move It
Another club track and I guess this is what he's really good at. Rockin a party. The beat is banging and the verse is energetic plus the chorus is catchy. This track rocks. Next!

05. Asian Beauty
A song bout them girls, finally! It's about why Asian got the finest chicks in the world and I think he's pointing to them Malaysian chicks. Malaysian chicks are hot and you just have to admit that! This is simply the track on this EP. Haha. The beat is so oriental and that makes you love your chick more than ever. I text my girl everytime I listen to this track. Haha.

06. Outro
Shout outs. Unnecessary.

So the conclusion is, this EP doesn't work good enough for me. Full of catchy chorus and listen to this if you're chillin. No heavy thinking is required for this EP. The quality is so-so but overall it was a good attempt by Yin Yang. Listen to this shit and judge it by yourself. I'm not sure whether he's still selling it or not. Try to approach him at his MySpace. Here's the link :

What Do I Think About : The Rhymeweaver – Hymns of Wrath & Passion

First of all, I know this is sooo fucking old but I would like to congratulate The Rhymeweaver(RW) for being such a hardworking guy and I think he was the first rapper in Malaysia to come up with something like Hymns of Wrath & Passion(HWP). I would like to remind you that this is not an album(LP & EP), it’s a mixtape, so don’t expect much for the quality. What’s so special about HWP? Find it out more over here :

http://rhymeweaver.blogspot.com/2008/03/frequently-asked-questions-about-hymns.html

Why do you have to listen to HWP? (I copied this from his blog though, check the link given above)

• Because Hymns of Wrath & Passion is unique. It is based on the ancient Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang and thus comprised of two halves called Hymns of Passion (tracks 1-5) which deals with love, happiness and joy, and Hymns of Wrath (tracks 6-10) which deals with death, destruction and evil. I'm pretty confident no one (in Malaysia at least) has attempted this kind of stuff.

• Because the rhymes are tight, the beats are banging, the topics of the songs are intriguing, and the samples are plain weird.

• Because it has two club tracks, one love song, one song on world peace, three vicious battle rap songs, and one song about black magic. That's a wide range of songs you can listen to.

• Because Emceedavid from MalaysianEmcee.com enjoys listening to this album, so I think you should like it too (click the link to read Emceedavid's review of Hymns of Wrath & Passion).

• Because now you can download the songs, the artworks, the Paradise Lost music video and a preview of my next mixtape Music From and Inspired by Classic Literature in one package for FREE!

Enough of that. Let’s move on to the review shall we? I’m going to break it down track by track so that you will know what are you going to expect from HWP. So...

1. Stars (Overtue)
This mixtape starts off with a song from the movie Pendekar Bujang Lapok by P.Ramlee. It sets the good vibe all around you and it’s short. Haha. This is good though, I hate a long ass intro.

2. Get Filled with MC Irv
There’s something about this beat that just keeps you wanna move. A good choice of track to start the mixtape. Delivery-wise, MC Irv came out strong on this one. I can tell that he had his fun while recording this track. Lol. This is not your ordinary club track. Yeah, you can dance to this track with your girl and all but do pay extra attention to the lyrics. Just dope.

3. This Is Just To Say
Jedi Mind Tricks? Nope. This is a corny love track. Sorry to say that, but hey, I’m just being honest. I think this is something personal to RW and I think not many people could relate to this track. This track is deep but the line “We be like Pokemon, I was Ash and you were Pikachu” made me lol.

4. Always Be My Baby ft. Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey? Haha. She’s in the track folks, for real! But, I bet she doesn’t even know who the Hell RW really is. This track sets that good vibe back. An appreciation track to dear Hip-Hop, RW spits some knowledge on this track. He killed the beat though his delivery is still not there, yet. But this track works just fine.

5. Paradise Lost ft. MC Nucleo
A boring intro and a boring beat. What a way to end the first side. Haha. But the topic he chose for this track is pretty cool though it is cliche as fuck. I would like to classify this track as a reminder track for the people out there. I will not say anything about MC Nucleo’s part though. Next!

6. Survive The Horror (Outbreak)
This is an intro for the second side of the mixtape. Hymns of Wrath. This is fucking horrifying but shit is quite long. Haha. But it still works for me though. OK, let’s move on to the next track.

7. The Forbidden Verses
Some tribal shit for the intro. What, that’s not horror enough? Wait till you listen to the chorus. Yeap, dude knows how to sing and it’s horrifying too. Lol. RW delivered dope verses on this track. He raps about some black magic shit and in order to feel this track, you have to be in this track. Be imaginative folks, and see what this track could do to you.

8. Legendary ft. Illevate
This is my favourite track off this mixtape, hands down. The beat is just fucking dope. This track starts off with Illevate giving shout outs and even that “check it out” phrase alone is fucking dope. Both rappers came out equal. Illevate got better delivery but RW amazes me with his rhymes. Only if the beat is produced by someone local....hurmm...owh, plus better quality...damn!

9. Vladimir Illyich Lenin
The title of this track is actually a name of the first head of the Soviet Union. I bet you already know what to expect from this track. Do not listen to this track with your parents nearby. This is an agressive track but it didn’t do anything to me though.

10. Heroes Of Might And Magic ft. Dafrosty
I don’t know why but I think RW is not that good at ending something. Not that good. Plus, I think Dafrosty jumped in a bit late from the beat. OK, conclusion!

Despite the quality, RW did a pretty good job by introducing himself to the scene with something like this. Overall, this mixtape is like a stepping stone for RW himself and to other struggling artists out there to work harder and be more productive and creative because this dude has set a new level in the scene. Do you really wanna see a newcomer (at that time) making fun of you veterans? Hahah. This is my homie The Rhymeweaver and he’s ill. He ain’t stoppin’ at one mixtape. Hip-Hop Lit coming up next!

The Rhymeweaver - The Mixtape Series Vol. 3: Supernatural Horror In Rap Music

What's up, my homie The Rhymeweaver is back with his 3rd mixtape. What more can I say about this guy, he has set a new level in the local Hip-Hop scene.

This guy is dope, I won't say much bout the mixtape coz I don't got the guts to listen to it yet. It's horrifying as fuck! Especially the mixtape's cover.

Fuck you, Azzam. Kau gile ke ape letak gambar pocong??

I don't recommend a download for this one, coz this mixtape deserves your money! Will write a review soon. Bila aku berani ah gile!

So for now, check out his blog!

Killing My Time While Time Is Killing Me

it's been quite awhile since my last post...i have a feeling like giving up on everything...u know, fuck rap, fuck music, fuck having relationshipS..yeah i almost did...

But she says : "maybe you're not trying hard enough"

that sentence kept repeating in my mind and I was like damn, I never gave my best to everything. You know the less I know, the better but the least I know the bitter (can't believe I came up with this).

Maybe I just should carry on with what I have and try to have things/somebody that I don't have and I just should give my best to everything & everyone. You know I made mistakes. Just can't run from that.

More efforts, Don. They need more and they wanna see more.

So, what's the point of this post?

...

yeap, that's the point..

the future is unpredictable. I'm 19 and I might die tomorrow. Perhaps, there won't be any future for me. But you know, the memories, they're getting brighter...and I'm trying my best.

and I present to you DMent. He's the best I got. You helped me to shape that man.
