Hi, it's been quite awhile and I would like to apologize for the lack of updates. But hey, I'm back and don't think that I'll ever stop.
So...
This time around, I chose to write about something that's very old. I believe many of you have forgotten about them. While you all are bumping to new stuff that just hit the stores, I decided to take myself back to the roots, to where it all started. This is the group that truly made Hip-Hop big in Malaysia. By the way, I'm not hatin' on anyone.
This is the first debut album by the legendary Hip-Hop group, Poetic Ammo. Don't tell me you never heard of them or else, stop reading this post and stop listening to local Hip-Hop. Back then, this group were made up of 4 talented-ill emcees who goes by the name of Yogi B, Point Blanc, Land Slyde & C.Loco. Word from Point Blanc, the group still exist but with just wo members left (Yogi B & Point Blanc). So that's about it. The album is called It's A Nice Day To Be Alive, this album is still fresh though it was released back in '98. It's been ten years and this album still rocks. The album cover is ill and you'll know it's a Hip-Hop album just by looking at the cover. I'm so sorry I couldn't find the picture of the album cover on the net and the only picture I found is the picture I've posted above. So if you have the picture of the cover for this album, please email me and help me to post up the picture right here. Oh, I have to stress this, the productions in this album is straight hardcore, so it was a brave move (at that time) to attack the local industry by introducing theirselves with this concept. Think Wu-Tang.
I found this at MidValley's Rock Corner while I was walking around killing my boredom. Still can't believe I found this classic album. Yeah you read that right. It's a classic. Why? Let's move on.
01. Look Out Below....
This is the intro of the album and it's ill. Nuff said.
02. Kuala Lumpur
Do not compare this to Too Phat's KL coz this track is straight up hardcore. Props to Point Blanc for droppin few familiar places on this track and I guess Point Blanc and Land Slyde stood up the most in this track. Maybe it's because of the imageries and the chemistry they had through-out the whole track. Catchy chorus.
03. Interlude
This is actually an intro for the next track. On this track, Yogi B explains how thankful he is to be born in Malaysia. Nothing much. Let's move on.
04. It's A Nice Day To Be Alive ft. Sam from Innuendo
The first time I listened to this track, it bored me. But I decided to give the track a few listens and I found that this track is quite nice. The beat is still dull for me though. Point Blanc opens this track with an energetic verse and I think his part is the best and Yogi B's verse deserves a compliment.
05. Something's On
I'm sure many of you have heard of this track before. Bumpy beats, catchy chorus and everything. Surprisingly, this track is boring. Sorry to say, Land Slyde's part sounds very annoying. Let's move on.
06. Drama Department Presents...
This is my thing right here. A very creepy intro and it got me waiting for the next track. Next.
07. Evils Of Man ft. Flipside a.k.a Sashi Kumar
This track got the element of Horrorcore. The beats, the rhymes, the delivery, everything about this track is creepy as fuck. Familyboy might be the pioneer of Horrorcore in Malaysia but this track sure deserves my props for introducing the genre to the country by accident. This is a dope joint! C.Loco finally got my attention by being the dopest member to spit on this track.
08. Father Be With Us ft. Pot & Taj of Innuendo
This is a very personal track by Land Slyde & C.Loco (they're brothers). Been listening to the track a few times because of the chorus. This is a dope track. I like it.
09. You Say What 'Bout Hip-Hop (Take No.1)
10. Peluru Puitis
This track was their first attempt to rap in Malay and they failed miserably, especially Yogi B.
11. Run Again...
I don't know what's the point of this track but it's pretty nice.
12. Approximate Detonation
This track is actually a bonus track and you will only find this track if you by the album in CD form. But this track is boring. So there's nothing special about this track.
13. Vallavan ft. Sri Ram
I actually like the beat for this track. But the only problem is I don't understand Tamil so I can't comment much about this track.
14. The Awakening......
Just another creepy intro.
15. Real For The World
The beat is dope at first, but it gets boring through-out the whole track. This track could've been better if they use another beat. Yogi B's verse is the best and Point Blanc's verse is boring. Overall this is a boring track and the outro is long as fuck.
16. You Say What 'Bout Hip-Hop (Take No.2)
17. Kam Sang Tah Kong Chai ft. Jerica & David a.k.a White Day, The Monk
Once again, I like the beat for this track and I actually can sing the chorus very well but I don't understand Cantonese so I can't comment much. But I was surprised that Land Slyde can rap in Cantonese. Props!
18. You Say What 'Bout Hip-Hop (Take No.3)
Word.
19. Everything Changes ft. Lady D
I think everybody in the local Hip-Hop scene have heard of this track. They all rap about their past experiences and backgrounds which to me is a good thing. Yogi B ends this track with a really good advice.
"Don't try, you know you'll miss"
And when you put Lady D on the chorus, you know that particular track will turn out very good. That's what happened to this track.
20. Radio PTRS
This track is hilarious as fuck. This track ends with the DJ saying
"Saya akan putarkan irama yang lembut dan indah"
21. Ammunition Check ft. Dave Childs
But what I heard on this track is very different. This is one hardcore track. Nice one DJ. Hahah. Everybody is very energetic on this track. A very nice way to end an album. Props to Land Slyde for being the fiyah on this track. But at one point, Yogi B's not making any sense but it's all good. This is a dope joint!
22. Raw Gratitudes
Unnecessary but I like it.
The conclusion is, Poetic Ammo did a very good job by introducing Hip-Hop to Malaysia with this kind of style and I believe they succeed at doing it. To me, this album is a classic. Nuff said. You still can get this album at all Rock Corner outlets in KL. They're still selling it. Though their era have ended but the name will forever be remembered as the group who truly made Hip-Hop big in Malaysia. But they still exist! Dope shit.
